2 months after the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali, US President George Bush calls for international agreements to tackle greenhouse gas emissions. On occasion of a conference on the future of renewable energies, Bush said that the world's biggest economies have to participate in a climate protection agreement to be able to resolve the problem effectively.

Austria: environmental organization handed in petition for climate change Print E-mail

On February 29, members of the environmental organization Global 2000 addressed a petition for a climate protection law to the Austrian government. The Global 2000 delegates were dressed as penguins to stress that these animals are severely threatened by climate change. The petition signed the beginning of a broad campaign aimed at promoting a national climate protection law.

The EU environment ministers meet in Bruxelles to discuss the controversial climate protection restrictions for automakers. From 2012, new cars whose emissions exceed the CO2 limit set by the European Union will be imposed high fines.

The German State Secretary Matthias Machnig said on Monday that he was going to argue for a lower fine for German car producers and a higher contribution from French and Italian car makers at the same time.

In an intern report written by the Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner and the High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, the EU warns against severe international crisis, the failure of states and the destabilization of whole regions due to climate change. Global warming bears high security risks and might cause yet unknown scenarios.

Bavaria: 4 degrees warmer by 2020 Print E-mail

A study published by the University of Bayreuth says that Bavaria will undergo dramatic climate changes by 2020. Until then, the southern and western parts of the country will even experience a 4°C rise in temperature. According to experts, extreme weather conditions such as heavy rainfalls, droughts or tempests will worsen. Climate change in general will have an increasing impact on the population's well-being, on nature, on agriculture and on traffic.

The high-tech industry now wants to assume a leading role in climate change. Environmentally friendlier information technology shall help to reduce energy consumption in all branches of economy. On the computer fair CeBIT that takes place in Hannover, Germany from March 4 to March 9, "green IT" is a crucial issue.
